Believe it or not, Creative Home Keeper will turn two next month. In some ways it is hard to believe that I have been blogging for two years, it has gone so fast! And in other ways, blogging has been a slow and steady race.
I’ve learned a lot, grown a lot, made some mistakes and have challenged myself. As I mentioned before, I don’t consider myself to be a blogger who blogs about blogging but I know that bloggers read others blogs, <– How many times can I fit the word blog into a single sentence? 🙂 and are always interested to read about the business side of their blog.
When I started blogging it was more of a creative outlet for me, a place to share my journey, thoughts and tips on homemaking, marriage, motherhood and faith. As the blog has grown, those themes are still very dear to my heart and I still write about them a lot, but my focus has grown to more intentional living in every area of my life.
While this blog still serves as a creative outlet for me, as well as the opportunity to minister and share my faith, the blog has also become the start of a small business for myself and my family.
If you would have asked me a few years ago, I never would have dreamed that I would have become a small business owner. It wasn’t even on my radar but with a lot of hard work, determination, support and prayer, this blog has become a way for me to bless my family as well.
I do earn a small income from the work I put into running and maintaining this site. Although to be perfectly honest, I don’t make near enough to match the hours of work I put in but that’s the story of every small business owner!
I love what I do. I have passion to create and write new content. I have enjoyed developing a sense of community and friendships with many of the readers and fellow bloggers. I would continue to do this gig even if I never made one single penny.
If you are a blogger, or have thought about becoming one, I wanted to share a little about how how I have grown CHK and turned it from a blog into a small business. I’m very intentional and thoughtful about every aspect of blogging, just like I strive to be in my life too.
4 Tips to Transform Your Blog into a Business
1. Cast a Vision
Casting a vision is where you lay out your big dreams. These are things that might sound crazy to others but you are so passionate about, you might burst. These are your big picture dreams, the things you most want to accomplish and what drives you.
I have a lot of big picture dreams, both for my family life and this blog. Without a vision we have nothing to guide us.
Regardless of whether or not you are a blogger or business owner, having a vision helps guide you as you try and reach your dreams and accomplish your goals. Which brings me to my next point…
2. Set Goals
Goal setting is something that I am deeply passionate about, I have written a whole eBook on it! Before I became a wife, mother and homemaker I was an elementary school teacher who regularly set goals in my classroom. Just about every single professional sets goals.
I believe that goals drive us, motivate us and guide us to accomplishing our dreams.
When you cast a vision you also have to develop a plan to reach that dream, that’s where goals come in.
Goals help you break the big picture down into smaller, achievable tasks. Goals help you create a plan and follow through. I don’t know of any successful business owner who wouldn’t admit that they achieved their success by casting a vision and setting goals to help reach it.
3. Invest in Great Tools
Once you have your vision for your blog and you have set some goals, it’s time to get to the practical steps to transform your blog into a business. You cannot have a successful blog without using some great tools to help grow, maintain and support your business.
On the to-do list is to create a site name, purchase a web domain name, decide what platform to build your blog on, set up hosting, and begin to develop content that will bring readers in and encourage them to keep coming back for more.
There are so many great tools to use but I would arguably say it is so important to secure a web host that goes above and beyond.
I have personally been using HostGator for the entire two years of this blog’s existence and I couldn’t be more than pleased. Not only are they affordable but they are also super dependable. They made it incredibly easy to get my blog started with a one click WordPress install with no messy downloading and uploading of files, which is great since I’m not exactly the most tech savvy.
Also their customer support is stellar! They have live 24/7 support via chat, phone, and email. Every single time I have had a problem with my site, they have provided assistance. When I “broke” my blog (believe me, it happens!) they got it back up and running in no time. In fact I have even received a personal phone call from one of their customer support staff to see how they could assist me in building my blog!
Along with hosting, HostGator also provides design services, SEO marketing and you can even purchase your web domain through them. It’s a one stop shop to build your online business!
I have personally worked through this course myself and I can honestly vouch for how good it is. I’ve been approaching my blog much differently, both as an entrepreneur and as a passion of mine. Using the lessons, assignments and expertise from Ruth, my blog has grown in ways I couldn’t imagine. So if you are looking for ways to turn your blog into a business that is authentic and something you are deeply passionate about (this isn’t a “get rich quick” course), then I highly recommend the Elite Blog Academy.
The sale is only going on today and tomorrow and will only be open to the first 200 people who enroll, so if you think you might be interested, I highly recommend signing up as soon as possible. And if you aren’t ready to sign up this time around, you can enter your email address and you will receive a free mini-eBook called “10 Steps to Take When Your Blog Post Goes Viral,” as well as receive periodic updates and blogging tips. You can learn more here.
4. Be Brave
There is nothing more scary then putting yourself out there. What if I fail? What if no one likes me? What if people disagree with me?
The online world can be a very scary place. It’s easy to sit behind a computer screen and type out words we would never say to someone face to face. It’s easy to misinterpret the tone of what someone typed in the comment box. But if we never put ourselves out there, we might not have the opportunity to reach our dreams.
I know that every time I hit publish I always hold my breath but the rewards far outweigh the risks.
If we don’t take the leap of faith we will never be able to turn our business into a success or provide a service that truly helps and inspired people. So take the leap and be brave. Trust me it’s worth it!

Are you interested in starting a blog or taking your blog to the next level?
I highly recommend Abby’s (from Just a Girl and Her Blog) eBook and course package, Building a Framework: The Ultimate Blogging Handbook. She recently updated the ebook and added an amazing package including 20 video tutorials including everything from setting up your blog with hosting, plugins, growing with social media, and how to earn money, just to name a few. She also has 15 video interviews with blog experts on SEO, selling products, writing, and time management, plus so much more!
There is also an amazing printable blog planner to help you get organized which is so important in transforming your blog from a hobby into a business. I have personally read her eBook and I can tell you it is packed with practical applications, tips and personal testimonies. Plus Abby has a natural way of writing and sharing information in such a gracious and generous manner, it’s like having a conversation with your friend over coffee!
Building a Framework is one of the many tools I have personally used to help plan, nurture and grow my own blog authentically and naturally. It’s one of my top recommendations for anyone who is looking to not only grow their blog but take their blog to the next level.
