Today I am joining up with the Behind the Scenes Link Up over at Crystal Stine’s blog. I love the idea of sharing the story behind my photos, especially since the picture only shows a small story. You can go here to read more about this link up.
The Photo: I shared this a few weeks ago on Instagram
Before I got married I used to have a dream that my husband and I would spend Saturday afternoons strolling hand-in-hand through bookstores or spending time together at a coffee shop reading and sipping coffee together (coffee is another thing my husband doesn’t like).
While we were dating we would go to coffee shops where we talked about our dreams and visions, as well as all that mushy stuff two people in a new found love discuss. Somehow though, in our short courtship and engagement (I’ll share that story sometime), the topics of reading and watching baseball never came up.
I was about to get a reality check.
I remember one weekend very soon after we were married I asked my husband (while he was watching a baseball game) if he wanted to go reading with me at the coffee shop. The look and response he gave me was priceless, a definite “Are you crazy, the Royals are actually winning!”
I realized very quickly we had two different loves, two different ways of enjoying our recreational time.
Baseball is probably one of my husbands first loves. He played as a child all the way through high school. He loves watching baseball on TV too. Despite how poorly our home town team of the Royals have played throughout the years, my husband has stayed a true, blue Royals fan. I enjoyed going to the occasional game with him, but watching it on TV was so boring for me. There were no distractions to entertain me like the hot dog races, the crazy people dancing to get on the jumbo screen, and the kiss cam (my personal favorite! ;)).
I finally asked my husband why he wanted me to watch the games with him all.the.time.
His response really had an impact on me. It wasn’t just watching the game that was important, it was more the quality time. He said he didn’t mind if I did something else while watching the games, just as long as we were together. Love! (Did I mention that I have a great guy!)
So I asked him if he would mind if I read while he watched the game, and he agreed. We have a pretty nice routine going. He watches, I read. He periodically shares highlights or interesting facts to me about the game, and I’ll share something that I’m reading that I think he might be interested in.
And you know what? We have both learned to love the other a little more. Now my husband spends a little more time reading then he did before, and I am amazed how much I know about the game of baseball now. Sometimes I even surprise him by saying something about baseball when we’re not even watching baseball!
Two different loves slowly merging together. Now I love those times of baseball watching and reading.
