We still use paper towels here at our house. I know that it would be most frugal, not to mention green, to just stop buying paper towels all together, but it’s nice to have paper towels around for the occasional use: spills, dirty messes, and who am I kidding, for me because I am an incredibly messy cook!
Paper towels, while disposable, really can pick up a dirty mess (sometimes better than a real towel). And sometimes you just want to throw away the paper towel with the mess itself, like when my dog decides to throw up on the floor!
However what I have been noticing is that when I left the paper towels out on the counter, we were beginning to use paper towels for EVERYTHING! Not only were we producing a lot of waste, we were also spending a lot of money on the paper towels themselves.
So for an experiment I chose to move the paper towels to the holder that was attached to the inside of our cabinet under the sink. Would the phrase out of sight out of mind, really apply?
Yes! By simply moving the paper towels out of plain view, we were in fact using them less.
When we need to wipe up a spill we grab the dish rag instead of reaching for a paper towel.
I know this sounds so basic, but sometimes it is the easy things that can help save you money, time, and help save the planet too!
