My love for fall is a bit excessive at best, I can’t help myself I pretty much love just about everything this season has to offer… except one thing.
While the leaves change colors and temperatures cool, I know what lies ahead. Sever sinus pain, sinus congestion and sinus pressure. No matter what I do to be preventive and build up my immune system, I have always struggled with sinus issues.
Just last week in fact the headaches and pressure in my left eye began after we had a drop in the temperature for a few chilly days. It starts off small and then begins to get worse as the season progresses.
Last year my symptoms got pretty bad. I was in the middle of a typical cold when things took a turn for the worst. My standard head cold turned into two days of the worst sinus pressure and pain I had ever experienced (I’m not even being a little dramatic either!)
It always seems that when I get a cold it’s usually my sinuses that are the worst, but this time was especially bad. I have had sinus pain and pressure before, but this was one of the worst cases that I can remember ever having. Every time I blew my nose I feared that something was going to explode (OK maybe that sounds a little dramatic but definitely a part of my reality at the time). 😉
It got so bad that I had to have a family member take the kids for a few hours because my head was in so much pain. I tried everything from a saline spray to some natural remedies to placing a warm washcloth over my face (which helped for a while). I couldn’t even wear my contacts for several days because the sinus pressure caused my eyes to hurt and water, not to mention they felt like they were going to bulge out of my head. And we won’t even mention the effects of my kids’ very loud voices when I’m in the midst of a full blown sinus headache. It seems like every single noise is amplified.
I’m pretty much a naturalist when it comes to getting over typical colds, meaning that I typically try and use natural remedies to help heal my body from illness when I can. I drank a lot of herbal teas, mainly because the warmth made me feel a little better. I also drank a lot of homemade chicken stock because nothing helps to alleviate a sickness like some delicious, warm chicken soup. Warm wash cloths and steam showers helped too.
With all that being said sometimes you also need to add in some over the counter medicine to help alleviate the sinus symptoms and that is exactly what I did. For years when I need it, I have taken SUDAFED® to help treat my sinus symptoms. Within a day I was back to my self and back to managing my responsibilities of my family and home.
