You know those days when everything just seems to be going wrong and you have no way to fix it? The kids are whining, food constantly gets spilled, your cranky and let your emotions spill out all over the place. You could really use a Mommy time-out but what you need most of all is a cup of coffee (or tea) and time to get away and alone with God.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have a whole morning? Well the reality is I don’t have the luxury of long mornings where I can get away somewhere quite and sit in His presence but I do have free moments here and there. And while I put priority on reading my Bible to hear God’s Words, I am so thankful that God has blessed so many writers with the gift of words through devotionals and Bible study aids.
I keep my Bible book basket stocked with some of my favorite devotionals to read when I get a few minutes of time. Sometimes as I’m going through my busy (and sometimes crazy) days, I just need a few minutes to sit and read something that reminds me that God is always with me and He is fighting for me, even on the hard days.
I love discovering new books and resources that help point my eyes away from wallowing in my own self pity and selfishness and helps me to renew my focus on the truths that set me free. Holly Gerth has written a brand new devotional called What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days: 52 Encouraging Truths to Hold On To… doesn’t the title alone just draw you in?
52 encouraging truths to hold on to when life seems hard and messy.
52 truths that are based on the Psalms that open up our eyes to see that God is God and He hasn’t left us alone to figure out this mess.
52 reminders of His daily grace and blessings on us.
Small enough to tuck into your purse or handbag to carry with you throughout your day or perfect to neatly slide into your Bible book basket, this little hardback devotional is perfect to accompany your daily “quiet” times (my oh my, how I wish my devotional times were actually quiet!) 🙂 It’s also beautiful enough to make a wonderful gift for the upcoming holiday season.
What I love is that since there are 52 devotionals, you could read one a day and read through the book quickly, or you could read one a week, mediating on the truths and promises of God. Each chapter is starts with a short passage from one of the Psalms, it’s even short enough to where you could actually memorize it!
Then Holly leads you through a time of reflecting where she shares a short story or lesson tied into the daily reading. The best part is that each chapter ends in a prayer with lines to customize a prayer need and some lines to journal any remaining thoughts you have been spoken to as you read through the day.
Holly gets real in this devetional and shares her own very hard struggles that she faces on a daily basis. She is vulnerable yet all her pain is focused towards God grace and healing strenght. We have plans of our own sometimes but so often God reminds us in a gentle way that our plans are not His plans and even though it doesn’t feel like it at the time, His plans are better for us because He truly knows us.
From Amazon’s Book Description: “In this uplifting book, Holley Gerth invites readers to sit down with her to be filled with the strength, peace, and joy that come from God’s promises to us. Each of the 52 devotions based on the Psalms will help weary women remember that God is good and we’re all in this together. Whether it’s a bad hair day or a broken heart, Holley offers hope and encouragement to get us through whatever life brings.
Women need that kind of encouragement because we all have hard days–days that make us want to give up, retreat inside ourselves, and drown our sorrows in a pint of ice cream. And while we may crave all sorts of things to ease the pain we feel in our hearts, what we really need is truth. We need to be confident in God’s character and his promises. We need to remember–and celebrate–who he made us to be. And we need exactly the kind of encouragement Holley Gerth loves to offer.”
