So remember that time when I apologized for not having Book Notes up the first day of the month but said it would be up the next day? Yeah… well here we are three days later and I’m just getting it up. Truth is yesterday during my work time I chose a nap instead because sometimes you just need a nap. I’m not normally a nap person but boy did I need one yesterday!
As I’ve been getting back into reading more after taking the summer off, I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of books that I want to read and the limited time I have to devote to reading as my other responsibilities grow. With the birth of this third baby I’m sure my time will be limited even more but that is when my Kindle comes to play since I will become a master at reading with one hand with the lights off, or dimly lit 🙂
Even though there are many books that I want to read, I’ve been thinking about revisiting a few books that I have read in previous years but I keep thinking about. Sometimes you just need to go back and re-read some favorites to help refresh your heart and soul.
When I looked at all the books I had bookmarked on my Amazon wishlist, I couldn’t find any motivation to want to start any of them but when I thought back to books on my bookshelves that I had read in the past and loved, I found that I was eager to re-read those again.
So what am I hopeful to re-read over the next few months? Well an assortment of a few different ones.
To help me reclaim my passion for my calling as a mother, especially during these early years of motherhood, is The Ministry of Motherhood: Following Christ’s Example in Reaching the Hearts of Our Children by Sally Clarkson. I quickly read this devotional style sequel to The Mission of Motherhood: Touching Your Child’s Heart for Eternity a few years ago. I have wanted to go back and slow down and really let the wisdom of Sally sink into my heart and remind me just how important this season in my little one’s lives really is and the role I play in fostering and nurturing their hearts and character into little hearts that grow to love the Lord.
To point me towards the hearts of brave, faithful women who have gone before me, Faithful Women and Their Extraordinary God by Noel Piper (wife of John Piper) is on my list to re-read again. A collection of short biographies of women who remained faithful to God during hard times and demanding situations, whose faith and courage never weakened as they remained planted firm on the truth of God. I also want to go back and re-read Noel’s other great book Treasuring God in Our Traditions as I’ve been thinking about our home is serving as a ministry to grow and nurture our children.
To remind myself that just because I’ve been a “good girl” all my life, God does have a plan of how to use my strengths, talents and story, Grace for the Good Girl: Letting Go of the Try-Hard Life by Emily Freeman. I’ve wanted to re-read this one ever since I snagged the Kindle version on sale last year.
While not a book that I have read before, I have had Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy by Nancy Leigh DeMoss on my bookshelf for far too long. I keep putting in on my reading list but for whatever reason it always gets passed by. With fall approaching, which is my favorite season, a season of thankfulness also comes too. While I do try to focus on gratitude, sometimes it’s easier sad than done. I think this book, which also included a 30 day devotional to use in my daily quiet time, will be such a refreshment for my soul.
As I prepare to refresh my heart and soul over the next few weeks and months re-reading some favorites I hope to encourage you as well to go back and revisit some books that brought encouragement, growth and refreshment to you.
What are some books that are worth re-reading for you?
