Keep Your Bible Out & Open
On the kitchen counter, the coffee table, the dinning room table, the bathroom vanity, next to the diaper changing table, on your desk… the options are endless. Keeping your Bible out and open in a spot where you or other members of your family can see it is so simple.
Another great option is create Bible book baskets for you and for your kids to keep out filled with age appropriate Bibles and books.
Looking for some great resources to fill your own Bible study basket? Check out this this of quiet time resources.
Some of my kid’s favorite when they were younger came from the dollar store! This is another great list of resources for kids to fill in their own Bible study baskets.
Display Scriptures Throughout Your Home
My favorite place to purchase beautiful Scripture art is through DaySpring. They have gorgeous placks, canvases, prints, home decor, and even stationary cards* that can be placed in frames to display throughout your home.
HopeInk is another favorite. Emily’s work is often a bonus product from the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle every spring so I always take advantage of stocking up on a few of her prints each year to display in various rooms.
Finally, Pinterest is a great place to search for free Scripture art. Just type “free scripture printables 8×10” (or whatever size you need) in the search bar and lots of options will pop up. *(Note: sometimes free will mean you will have to sign up for an email list)
Fill Your Home with Music
Gospel-focused music is such an easy way to help fill your home with God’s truth but sometimes when we play the radio, our thoughts and mediations are often distracted by the DJ’s commentary or advertisements.
A simple solution is to stream music through various online sources such as Spotify or Pandora.
My favorite Pandora channels are Sara Groves, All Sons and Daughters or Ellie Holcomb. If you use the free service, there are a few ads that filter through every so often but it’s minimal compared to the radio. There are also upgraded memberships you could purchase to elimate the ads.
Purchasing quality music is also a great investment. Seeds Family Worhsip* are a favorite of ours. Not only are they Christ-centered but they are also designed to help you memorize Scripture!
Read Aloud the Bible
Reading the Bible aloud to our children can seem overwhelming.
Where do you begin? Do you read beginning to end? What about those scandalous passages? Or the ones with lots of numbers, hard to pronounce names, or laws?
All valid questions and I have found the greatest encouragement to simply open the Bible and begin reading aloud is from the book Together: Growing Appetites for God* by Carrie Ward.
Here is some good news for you…. reading aloud doesn’t always mean YOU have to be the one reading. Listening to audio Bibles counts as well!
The YouVersion Bible app is completely free to download and includes several audio editions of different Bible translations. Of course you could always purchase an audio Bible to download from a streaming service such as Audible.
Our favorite audio versions are The Jesus Storybook Bible*, The Beginner’s Bible*, The Word of Promise New Testament NKJV*, or The One Year Chronolofical Bible NLT*
Have Open Conversations About God’s Word
It’s easy to talk about what God is doing in our lives when we have family devotional times but getting into the habit of making this a natural part of our conversations each day takes a bit more work.
Thankfully there are wonderful resources to help guide these discussions and to make this a natural part of our day.
The easiest place to do this at the dinner table (or breakfast and lunch times).
The One Year Dinner Table Devotions and Discussions* by Nancy Guthrie is a great place to start!
Marty Machowski’s series of family Bible devotions* is also a great resource to help get conversations started.
Other great books to help make daily worship and intentional conversations happen are Family Worship* by Donald Whitney, The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Family* by Kara Powell, or Sally and Clay Clarkson’s Our 24 Family Ways Devotional* is great too!
Memorize God’s Word
Memorizing Scripture, both on your own or together as a family, is such a rich experience. It can be done naturally through your day, and when you are memorizing together as a family or with friends, using one another is great accountability.
My own resource, Scripture Graces: Bible to Brain to Heart Scripture Memory Toolkit will walk you through, step-by-step, on memorizing the entire passage of John 1: 1-18.
Mentioned above, Seeds Family Worship* will help you memorize Scripture by placing it to music in an innovative way to plant it in your heart.
While designed for kids, this Scripture Memory Boxed Set* is perfect for all ages.
Finally, the Hidden In My Heart Scripture Memory Bible NLT* is a perfect resource for people of all ages to walk through Scripture memory in the Bible.
Write the Word
Writing the Word is something I am deeply passionate about and is something that I do every single day.
It has helped me engage in God’s Word like nothing I have ever done before!
The Scripture Graces Quick Start Guide will help you begin writing Scripture if you don’t know where to begin. and if you are ready to tackle a longer book of the Bible, this is the tool I use (and created!) to write through the entire Gospel of John, word by word.
Another popular choice are the Write the Word journals by Lara Casey*. They are more topical vs. an entire book, but they are beautiful Scripture journals that will make gorgous keepsakes in your Spiritual growth collection.
She even has a Write the Word journal for kids* now!
Practice Daily Gratitude
Cultivating a spirit of thanksgiving is something we are called to do year round, not just in the month of November.
There is a reason why the practice of listing out our daily blessings has grown in popularity in recent years. Research has shown over and over again the benefits of practicing true thankfulness in our lives on a daily bless.
Purchase an inexpensive notebook or journal*, and as a family write down things each day you are grateful go. Challenge yourself to go beyond the generic items of family, home and food (all blessings but we can easily get stuck in a rut and not look for simple blessings around us).
You can even make a gratitude log.
Choosing Gratitude* by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth is a fantastic book to lead you to developing a rich habit of gratitude, joy, and thankfulness each day. Growing in Gratitude* is another great one too!
Fill Your Shelves with Books & Resources that are Gospel-Centered
Filling our homes with books, magazines, movies, coloring books, or any other form of media that are Gospel-focused and Christ-centered is an important investment we can make.
Keeping baskets of books to house quiet time materials and other books for each member of the family is so simple, yet it ensures Bible study materials are always within reach.
Investing in items to grow your children’s faith, from toys to activity books, has lasting impact.
Making TV time intentional can help fill everyone’s hearts.
Thankfully, there are more and more family-friendly, faith-building options available to us these days with resources like Menno Kids (Formally JellyTelly)*, PureFlix*, or even carefully selected shows using Amazon Prime*.
The library can also be a great resource to check out books and movies to keep a constant rotation of quality literature without having to blow through your budget.
Pray Often
It seems obvious, but how often do we really intentionally pray together or over our homes?
Making it a habit is something that does require discipline but with effort, the rewards are eternal.
Use these prayer prompts to pray over your home while you clean.
Pray over your marriage with these tools, or pray over your children with these great resources.
Modeling prayer to your children is important but can sometimes feel strange if you aren’t used to it.
There are many, many more wonderful resources I could have easily added to this list but to keep it short, managable, and to avoid decesion fatigue 😉
I’ll stop here B U T I would love to keep the conversation going so please chim in with your favorite resources to create a Christ-centered home below in the comments!
What resources would you add to the list?
I can’t wait to hear what you will add to the list!!!
